"Humanitarian Aid"

The European Commission’s Directorate-General Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection (DG ECHO) does not intervene directly on the ground. The implementation of humanitarian aid actions is done by humanitarian organisations, such as humanitarian Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs), with which DG ECHO enters into a partnership.

"EU Aid Volunteers"
The EU Aid Volunteers initiative provides opportunities to European citizens and long-term residents, from a wide range of backgrounds and with a diversity of skills and professional experience, to get involved in humanitarian aid projects, support the provision of needs-based humanitarian aid in third countries and engage in volunteering opportunities, through deployment and online-volunteering.

The initiative focuses on strengthening the European Union's capacity to deliver needs-based humanitarian aid by providing professional support through the deployment of trained volunteers to people in need. Furthermore, it aims to strengthen the capacity and resilience of vulnerable communities in third countries, through the implementation of joint projects between experienced humanitarian operators and local organisations in third countries.

"EU Aid Volunteers Deployment "
The objective of the call is to fund projects involving the selection, preparation and deployment of EU Aid Volunteers to contribute to strengthening the Union's capacity to provide needs -based humanitarian aid aimed at strengthening the capacity and resilience of vulnerable and disaster - affected communities in third countries. It also supports actions aimed at strengthening the capacities of implementing sending and hosting organisations participating / intending to participate in the initiative.

Applicant details Projects are designed and implemented by transnational partnerships involving at least two certified sending organisations from two different countries and two certified hosting organisations.

Within the4 project duration:
  • Deployment placements of EU Aid Volunteers can range between 1 month as a minimum and 18 months as a maximum. Before being deployed a volunteer must successfully undergo the selection phase
  • Apprenticeship placements prior to deployment (only for junior volunteers) may last a maximum duration of 6 months.
Type of Funding Grant
Financial details The total budget earmarked for the co-financing of projects is estimated at 8,4 Mio€. The maximum grant will be 1,4 Mio. €. Grant requests below 100 000 € will not be considered for funding.
