"Interreg Hungary – Croatia"

The Hungary – Croatia border area is characterised by an intense and diverse co-operation, facilitated by appropriate cross-border connections, shared knowledge and active and motivated groups of the society, in the focus of which stands the sustainable and value-added exploitation of the region’s rich natural and cultural resources and the permanent enrichment of economic, institutional and individual relationships across the border.

In order to achieve this long-term goal, five priority axes have been identified within which a number of investment priorities have been recognized as tools for the strategic development of the region:

  • Priority Axis 1: Economic Development - Enhancing the competitiveness of SMEs
  • Priority Axis 2: Sustainable Use of Natural and Cultural Assets – Preserving and Protecting the Environment and Promoting Resource Efficiency
  • Priority Axis 3: Cooperation - Enhancing Institutional Capacity and an Efficient Public Administration
  • Priority Axis 4: Education - Investing in Education, Training, including Vocational Training for Skills and Lifelong Learning by Developing Education and Training Infrastructure
  • Priority Axis 5: Technical Assistance

These priority axes are part of a comprehensive strategy identifying the appropriate course of action, which focuses strongly on the enhancement of economic competitiveness of SMEs, in that way boosting the economic development of depressed rural areas.

"Interreg Hungary-Croatia"

This funding is designated to support activities in the Hungarian-Croatian border region that contribute to the following goals:

  • Fostering value added business co-operations between SMEs operating on different sides of the border
  • Converting the region’s natural and cultural heritage assets to tourism attractions with income generating capabilities,  Restoring the ecological diversity in the border area
  • Involving more social and institutional actors in cross-border co-operation
  • Improving the role of educational institutions as intellectual centres for increasing the specific local knowledge-base in the region

As the basic rule, the headquarters of the organisation has to be in the eligible Programme area, meaning the NUTS 3 regions covered by the Co-operation Programme.

Project Partner Details

Every project has to have at least one Hungarian Beneficiary and at least one Croatian. One of them has to take on the role of Lead Beneficiary. There can be altogether maximum 8 organisations in a project as Beneficiary. (Other stakeholders, supporting the project professionally, but not having any costs reimbursed from ERDF, can be involved and  indicated on a separate sheet of the application form.) Any given organisation can participate in as many applications as they wish, either as Lead Beneficiary in all, or as Beneficiary or in any combination of these. Organisations coming from a third country are not eligible as Beneficiary.

Important note: The minimum duration of project implementation is, for project proposals of all Specific Objectives, 4 months. 

Type of Funding Grant
Financial details A maximum of 85 per cent of the total eligible expenditure of the project would be financed from EU contribution.
The indicative amount of the first Call is 26,53 million €, available for three different priorities

Project sizes are as follows (in the Specific Objectives that have been opened in this Call), meaning not the maximum amounts or ERDF for a given project but the total costs of an operation:

2.1 ‘Convert the region’s natural and cultural heritage assets to tourism attractions with income generating capabilities’
Component 1 – ‘Bicycle paths’, 200,000 to 2,000,000 €
Component 2 – ‘Tourism attractions’, 200,000 to 1,500,000 €
Component 3 – ‘Thematic routes and other tourism products’, 100,000 to 400,000 €

2.2 ‘Restoring the ecological diversity in the border area’ – 150,000 to 1,500,000 €

3.1 ‘Involvement of more social and institutional actors in cross-border cooperation’
Component 1 – ‘Thematic cooperation’, 150,000 to 300,000 €
Component 2 – ‘People-to-people cooperation’, 50,000 to 200,000 €

4.1 ‘Improve the role of educational institutions as intellectual centres for increasing the specific local knowledge-base in the region’
Component 1 – ‘Co-operation in higher education’, 100,000 to 300,000 €
Component 2 – ‘Co-operation in preschool, primary and secondary education and adult education’, 100,000 to 250,000 €
