Call: Next generation electric drivetrains for fully electric vehicles, focussing on high efficiency and low cost

Programme
Type of Fund Action programme
Description of programme
"Horizon 2020 - Societal Challenges "
A challenge-based approach will bring together resources and knowledge across different fields, technologies and disciplines, including social sciences and the humanities. This will cover activities from research to market with a new focus on innovation-related activities, such as piloting, demonstration, test-beds, and support for public procurement and market uptake.
Funding focuses on the following challenges:
  • Health, demographic change and wellbeing;
  • Food security, sustainable agriculture and forestry, marine and maritime and inland water research, and the Bioeconomy;
  • Secure, clean and efficient energy;
  • Smart, green and integrated transport;
  • Climate action, environment, resource efficiency and raw materials;
  • Europe in a changing world - inclusive, innovative and reflective societies;
  • Secure societies - protecting freedom and security of Europe and its citizens.

Next generation electric drivetrains for fully electric vehicles, focussing on high efficiency and low cost
Description of call
"Next generation electric drivetrains for fully electric vehicles, focussing on high efficiency and low cost"

Developments have already been undertaken in recent years to optimise drivetrain components for fully electric vehicles (FEVs), in particular in terms of efficient use and recovery of energy. However, the next generation of electric drivetrains should be conceived to also take into account design for manufacturing, low weight and material cost.

Proposals should address one or several of the following aspects:

  • Functional system integration of electric machines (e.g. high speed motors) with transmissions, optimisation of energy recovery with the integration of braking systems.
  • Lower cost electric machines through reduced need for rare earth magnets and designs optimised for lower cost manufacturing processes.
  • Integration of power electronics with battery charging functions together with associated control and of wide bandgap semiconductors providing high temperature, high power density, and high frequency capabilities.
  • Modular electric power train components compatible with both full electric and hybrid applications, sub-systems and topologies with enhanced noise, vibration and heat (NVH), reliability, safety and fault tolerance and robustness, fit for mass manufacturing.
